What Can You Do To Maintain The Heater In Your New Home?

If you're new to home ownership, taking care of a furnace may be new to you as well. Although furnaces don't require a lot of upkeep, knowing what you can do to extend the service life of your new home's heater can save you money. The following tips will help you maintain your home's furnace.

Change the Air Filter

Your HVAC system has an air filter to clean the air that flows through the ducts. The air filter works for the air conditioner as well as the furnace, and needs to be replaced every 3 months that the HVAC system is in use. Failure to replace the HVAC air filter can force the furnace to work harder than necessary to heat your home, causing wear and tear on the unit. To replace the air filter, you'll need to find the old air filter, which will likely to be located in a slot between the return air duct and the blower. Turn off the furnace and remove the old air filter. Use the old air filter to find an identical replacement filter at the hardware store or home improvement center.  Once you have a new filter, insert it into the slot and turn back on the furnace.

Clean the Air Ducts

Cleaning the air ducts in your home can help keep dirt and grime out of your furnace, which can help it run efficiently and avoid breakdowns. There's no set time limit for cleaning the air ducts; this is just done every several years as the system becomes dirty. You can find out whether or not your ducts are ready for cleaning by having a heater repair professional inspect the ducts when they start to show signs of needing a cleaning. The signs that your air ducts need to be cleaned include:

  • Your home gets dustier when the furnace is turned on.
  • Your air ducts have a layer of dirt and dust inside.
  • Your allergies get worse when the HVAC system is running.

Once your system displays signs of needing a cleaning, talk to an HVAC repair person, like

Use the Programmable Thermostat

Your home's programmable thermostat can be used to change the temperature of your home throughout the day and night, so the temperature of your home is always the ideal temperature and no energy is ever wasted. For example, you may use your programmable thermostat to lower the temperature of your home during the day while you're at work, and raise the temperature of your home at night while you're at home. Using the programmable thermostat can reduce the wear and tear on your furnace and extend its service life.

Get Regular Tuneups

Your heater repair person can help keep your home's furnace operating at its optimal efficiency. Have a heater repair person take a look at your heater once per year, before the heating season begins. Your heater repair person can make recommendations for preventative maintenance, which can help you avoid a furnace breakdown. For more information about how you can maintain your furnace, speak with your heater repair person.
